Once you have received a citation, you have several options
- Handle the case yourself
- Hire a professional to handle it for you
- Forget about it and wait for the police to come arrest you for failure
to appear
Handle the case yourself.
The District Attorney's Office has posted hours where people can come by to
request that their charges be dismissed or reduced.

Typical cases that can be dismissed are:
- If you are charged with expired registration or inspection violation,
and you take proof that you have corrected the problem.
- You receive a citation arising out of a collision charging you with a
minor moving violation, and you take a letter from your car insurance
carrier showing you had insurance on the date of the collision and that the
matter has been reported to them for investigation or payment of the other
party's claim.
The District Attorney can not give you legal advice.
If you are charged with speeding and need the charges reduced, you need to
know:
- Your driving history
- The effect a reduction might have on your insurance
- Whether the reduced charge could combine with another charge from your
past that will result in a revocation of your drivers license.
If you go to Court by yourself,
you need to know
- How much money you need to take
- What punishment is usually imposed by the Judge that you appear
before
- How much time you can spend in jail for pleading guilty
Things an attorney can do for you
that you can not typically accomplish yourself:
- Determine if your speeding charge qualifies for a reduction to "Improper
Equipment"
- Determine if you qualify to pray that judgment be continued, "PJC"
- Handle most speeding violations and many other matters without you
ever appearing at the Courthouse.
- On more serious charges, you will meet with one of the attorneys prior
to your court date, review the circumstances surrounding your charge, and
formulate the strategy that impacts you circumstances in the least harmful
way.
